VPN vs Proxy: Choosing the Right Privacy Solution

As technology continues to advance daily and clients are presented with new or enhanced IT services, identifying the optimal service or offering for business can pose a challenge in comparison to others

VPN and proxy are two services that can help you mask your IP address and access geo-restricted material. They do, however, have several key distinctions that you should be aware of before deciding on one.

⚡ What is Proxy ? 📜

A proxy server functions as a bridge between client devices and the internet. It is used for a variety of objectives, including boosting performance, increasing security, and giving anonymity. Proxies function at the application layer (Layer 7) of the OSI model. They intercept and redirect client requests to servers and vice versa. Proxies can inspect, change, or cache material throughout this process.

Between users and the internet, a proxy server acts as a gateway. Because it stands between end users and every webpage they view, it is often referred to as an intermediate server. Online activity seems to be originating from a different location when using a proxy server, which has its own Internet Protocol (IP) address. Protecting your devices against cyber risks, it is configured similarly to firewalls or web filters.

⚡ What is VPN ? 📜

In order to prevent websites from seeing your actual IP address or location, a VPN also reroutes your internet traffic through a distant server and masks it (for more information, read our article on how to alter your IP location). On the other hand, because it operates at the operating system level, all of your traffic (whether it originates from a background applications or your browser) is redirected.

When accessing Wi-Fi at a public place internet, customers may browse the internet safely with the help of a VPN service like Cisco AnyConnect (Corporates VPN) or Express VPN (Individual users). Instead of utilizing the public Wi-Fi, which is vulnerable to hacking if it is not encrypted or has inadequate security, users can establish a virtual private network (VPN).

⚡ VPN Vs Proxy.. Your Choice ?

Proxy servers and VPNs both provide solutions to improve privacy and security. A proxy server serves as an intermediary for certain types of data, whereas a VPN creates a secure and encrypted connection for all internet traffic. The decision between a proxy and a VPN is influenced by the unique use case as well as the level of privacy and security necessary.
