VPN vs. Firewall: Decoding the Essential Components of Network Security

When Talking about network security, There are two terms generally came into mind and these are VPN and firewall. Although they offer different features and functions, but both these technologies are used to secure your network from the external users.

⚡ What is VPN ? 🔱🔱

In order to prevent websites from seeing your actual IP address or location, a VPN also reroutes your internet traffic through a distant server and masks it (for more information, read our article on how to alter your IP location). On the other hand, because it operates at the operating system level, all of your traffic (whether it originates from a background applications or your browser) is redirected.

When accessing Wi-Fi at a public place internet, customers may browse the internet safely with the help of a VPN service like Cisco AnyConnect (Corporates VPN) or Express VPN (Individual users). Instead of utilizing the public Wi-Fi, which is vulnerable to hacking if it is not encrypted or has inadequate security, users can establish a virtual private network (VPN).

⚡ What is Firewall ? 🔥🔥

Firewalls are basically residing in the network and use for Primary filtering ( it can be physical appliances or VMs) that work at both the network and application layers. Firewall provide a platform for the features/functionality needed for network security like VPNs, NGIPS, Anti-Malware Protection.

We have different types of Firewalls- Stateful Firewalls, NGFW and UTM.

Next-generation security should not abandon proven stateful inspection capabilities in favor of application and user ID awareness by itself. Comprehensive network security solution needs include Firewalls, next-generation Firewalls (application inspection and filtering) and next generation intrusion prevention systems (context aware). The Firewall often is the conduit from which other defense components combat the threats that face the network

⚡VPN Vs  Firewall .. Make yourself Aware 🌐

Firewall is a network security mechanism that regulates traffic according to predefined rules. A virtual private network (VPN) is a private network that encrypts communication and routes it through a public network.

VPNs encrypt all data that flows via the network, whereas Firewalls prevent network access.

Firewall checks incoming traffic by limiting ports and barring prospective attackers. To avoid risks, a VPN covers your location and personal information.

Firewall functions more like a buffer between two network points, examining data flow and stopping harmful software. A VPN functions more like a tunnel or bridge to your websites.

VPNs help to encrypt data and protect privacy, whilst Firewalls act as a barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external networks.

In a layered security architecture,
Firewalls and VPNs frequently cooperate. While Firewalls regulate and monitor traffic to shield the network from outside dangers, VPNs provide secure communication routes.
