Volume Resizing with Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows

Volume Resizing with Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows

Let's discuss on the volume resizing with Veeam Agent for Microsoft windows as you know volume resizing is the important part to be covered while restoring and we have two method to cover it.

Fig 1.1- Volume Resizing

If you select Volume-Level Restore, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows resizes the restored volume according to your specified size. When you select Volume-Level Restore, Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows restores data from the backup and resizes the restored volume.

It is also possible to resize volumes after a hardware upgrade to help restore data.

Well there are two types of Volume resizing we will discuss in short and these are Volume Shrink and Volume extend.

Volume Shrink
When you restore a volume from a backup to a new location with less space than the size of the backup, you can shrink the volume. The original location of the volume can also be shrunk in order to free space on the target location.

Volume Extend
You can extend a backup volume by restoring it to a location with more available disk space than that for which the backup volume was originally created.

When you replace an old HDD drive with a faster but less capacitive SSD drive, shrink backup files to restore the system volumes of your computer to the smaller disk.

Another thing you can do is to restore the backup volume to a new, high-capacity hard drive when performing volume-level restoration

Limitations
But there are limitations too,
When the backup volume exceeds the free space on the target disk, you can't restore the volume to the smaller volume. Only NTFS volumes can be resized. Another thing keep in mind that during a restore operation, resizing an encrypted BitLocker volume will result in the volume not being encrypted
