Part 1: Nutanix and its Products

Nutanix and its Products

On September 23, 2009, Dheeraj Pandey, Mohit Aron, and Ajeet Singh founded Nutanix. Aron left Nutanix in the beginning of 2013 to launch Cohesity, a privately held computer data storage company.

SAN storage systems have become a standard for power-critical databases since the 90s in data center infrastructures. However, traditional SAN-based storage can no longer keep up with the growing IT needs of organizations due to their growing dependency on technology, such as cloud computing.

Hyperconvergence technology is a new concept of distributed computing that emerged in 2009.Complete cluster was the first HCI-specific product introduced into the market in 2011 by Nutanix.

As a hyperconverged technology, Nutanix cloud architecture has a significantly different physical layer compared to traditional architectures. Nutanix HCI replaces separate servers, storage, and SANs by integrating compute, storage, storage networking, and virtualization.

Nutanix clusters consist of compute, memory, and storage nodes. Performance, scalability, and resilience are achieved through the Nutanix operating system Acropolis Operating System (AOS).It is common for Nutanix clusters to consist of three servers or more.

Using the server's local disks, each server contributes storage to the Nutanix cluster.

  • A hybrid cluster combines SSDs for caching and hard disk drives (HDDs) for storage on the server.
  • A solid-state disk cluster provides caching and storage via solid-state disks (SSDs)

Hypervisors and Nutanix controller VMs run on Nutanix nodes. In addition to providing software intelligence, the CVM serves I/O to running virtual machines.

In our next article we will talk about the storage types and other things related to Nutanix
