What is Subnetting?

Subnetting divides a single IP network into smaller logical sub-networks (subnets). Each subnet functions as a separate broadcast domain, improving network performance, security, and IP address management efficiency.

CIDR Notation

CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) uses a suffix to indicate how many bits represent the network portion. For example, 192.168.1.0/24 means the first 24 bits are the network, leaving 8 bits for hosts (256 addresses, 254 usable).

Class A: 1.0.0.0–126.255.255.255 (/8 default)
Class B: 128.0.0.0–191.255.255.255 (/16 default)
Class C: 192.0.0.0–223.255.255.255 (/24 default)
